For #MonochromeMonday, the #bronze sculpture of "Grieving Magdeburg", located inside #Johanniskirche in Magdeburg.

The original is part of a large Luther Monument in Worms that was unveiled in 1868. This lady represents the city of Magdeburg grieving after the "Sack of Magdeburg" in 1631, when the Protestant city was razed to the ground by Catholic troops. In 1906, a local industrialist gifted a replica of the allegorical #Magdeburg to the city, which was placed inside Johanniskirche in 1924. Magdeburg and this church were largely destroyed in 1945, with this #statue still standing within the ruins. Thus, it became a symbol of the city's second destruction and reconstruction.

But sure, let's try that shit again 90 years later. What could possibly go wrong?
